A Development Center (DC) is a powerful tool for stimulating the personal growth of the participants and people involved in the organisation and, at the same time, it supports the changes within a team or the organisation. A DC is an excellent opportunity to create a development plan, together with the participant, based on his/her own practices and learning situations. In this way, a beneficial combination of the organisational goals, the required qualifications and the participants' opportunities is brought about. The development of the organisation and the people within it go hand in hand.
The Development Center can be used for:
- Organisational change
Professionally facilitated by Kessels & Smit consultants, the participants work on an urgent organisational issue. By doing this together with managers, co-workers and clients, the organisational change or merger can take shape. While the participants learn, they strengthen their relationships with customers and colleagues.
- Leadership development
By experimenting with new behaviours in work situations, managers grow their impact as leaders. They receive continuous feedback from our consultants and immediately experience the effects of their different approaches. In this way, they gain insight into their talents and developmental potential.
- Team development
Teams know patterns of collaboration. The DC makes these patterns visible, breaking through the ineffective patterns while continuing the effective ones. The team members receive feedback as they work on a real job. They practice new ways of working together, which leads to a well-functioning team.

A catalyst for personal growthEvery year, the Dutch government's leadership agency organises a 'leadership learning journey' for around thirty high-potential civil servants. These are the future top-level directors and managers of the government. Since 2003, Kessels & Smit has been organising one of these meetings: the Learning Center. The aim of this learning intervention is to help managers discover their strengths and talents and how they can use them effectively. But also to explore pitfalls and stumbling blocks: where do these patterns come from? And how can the candidates tackle them effectively? Approach We work with a Development Center - approach [link]. This means that participants are given the opportunity to work very intensively on the basis of their own cases.
